National Earthquake Center
The Center is considered a
referenced, specialized and scientific organization in the field of earthquake
studies and researches, authorized to carry out all kinds of earthquake
monitoring work at the national level; to distribute and publish its data earthquake
catalog as required by the public interest.
It aims to build a homogenous and
applicable research system with primary goal is to adopt and implement a
national scientific strategy to mitigate earthquake risks. To achieve this
goal, it undertakes the following tasks in coordination and cooperation with
other relevant public organizations interested in acquiring and processing
earthquake data.
·
Conducting
statistical studies and research on the historical earthquake events that
occurred in the territories of the Syrian Arab Republic and in the neighboring
regions, processing and documenting them.
·
Conducting
probabilistic studies and research of expected earthquakes.
·
Carrying
out geological and structural research and studies with the aim of investigating
active tectonic zones
·
Study
the impact of earthquakes on residential infrastructures and buildings and take
appropriate measures with the relevant authorities
·
Preparing
seismic hazard and risk maps that show the classification of the various
seismic zones in the Syrian Arab Republic and their extensions in neighboring
countries
·
Managing,
operating and developing earthquake and movement of active tectonic monitoring
networks
·
Managing
and operating of various geophysical application systems related to seismic
monitoring
·
–
Creating a national earthquake data catalog and archiving analog and digital record signals about
earthquakes in Syria and the world and developing a mechanism for distributing
and exchanging national and global earthquake data.
·
Providing
studies, consultations, and expertise to public, cooperative, joint, private,
and Arab and foreign organizations.
·
Preparing
national emergency plans to mitigate earthquake risks, conducting field
research at the sites of earthquakes when they occur, and contributing to
directing rescue, evacuation plans if necessary.
·
Cooperating
with media, publishing awareness programs, and issuing booklets and monthly bulletin
about earthquakes, the causes of their occurrence, their various effects, and
how to behave before, during, and after occurrence of seismic disaster.
·
Cooperating
with local, Arab, regional and international organizations in collecting and
exchanging data on earthquakes that occurred in the region and in transferring
knowledge to those working at the center and to those interested in this field
in other sectors.
·
Inviting
experts and holding seminars, training courses, workshops conferences and
conferences aimed to develop the necessary local capabilities and expertise
needed in the fields of earthquake studies and risk mitigation.
·
Cooperating
with Syrian universities in supervising postgraduate students who conduct their
research at the center or at the universities, the supervisors must meet the
conditions stipulated in the Syrian university regulations.
·
Suggesting
proposals regarding Arab, regional and international cooperation or memorandum
of understanding related to earthquakes.
·
Strengthening
relations between the Syrian Arab Republic and Arab, regional and international
countries and organizations in all matters related to seismic risks and
representing them in organizations, meetings, scientific conferences and
workshops related to the center’s work areas.
