About the Center
The Center is considered a referenced, specialized and scientific organization in the field of earthquake studies and researches, authorized to carry out all kinds of earthquake monitoring work at the national level; to distribute and publish its earthquake catalog as required by the public interest.
It aims to build a homogenous and applicable research system with primary goal is to adopt and implement a national scientific strategy to mitigate earthquake risks.
Tasks & Responsibilities
- Conducting statistical studies and research on the historical earthquake events in Syria and neighboring regions, processing and documenting them.
- Conducting probabilistic studies and research of expected earthquakes.
- Carrying out geological and structural research to investigate active tectonic zones.
- Studying the impact of earthquakes on residential infrastructures and buildings and coordinating with relevant authorities.
- Preparing seismic hazard and risk maps for Syria and neighboring countries.
- Managing and developing earthquake monitoring networks and geophysical systems.
- Creating a national earthquake data catalog and archiving analog and digital records.
- Providing studies, consultations, and expertise to public, cooperative, private, Arab and international organizations.
- Preparing national emergency plans and contributing to rescue operations when necessary.
- Cooperating with media, issuing awareness programs, booklets, and bulletins on earthquakes.
- Collaborating with local, Arab, regional, and international organizations in earthquake data exchange.
- Inviting experts, holding seminars, workshops, and training courses.
- Cooperating with universities in supervising postgraduate research.
- Proposing Arab, regional, and international cooperation agreements related to earthquakes.
- Strengthening relations and representation in seismic risk-related organizations and conferences.
